It's not true that "they are almost always purely decorative these days" -- many homeowners spring for real, operable shutters because to do anything less actually downgrades the quality of their home. Fake shutters add no "character" whatsoever. Also, in photo 24, the advice is to replace the front door and windows. That's fine if it's a cheaply built home with a vinyl door in, say, Arizona, but DO NOT replace your original wood doors and windows if you have an historic house. Not all homes are the same and advice on home improvement shouldn't be either.

I have to say, the shutters in #19 look horrible. People, please do not install shutters like the ones seen in the listing titled, "19. Make or Buy Window Shutters." Even fake shutters need to look functional for proper, sensible design. Note that the shutters would far exceed the height of the windows. This is nothing against the article; just the stock photo selected. These shutters (as they are currently installed) are the mark of a true amateur. They look jaw-droppingly terribly and, most important, they don't make sense. Note not just the height issue, but also how far apart they are installed from the window. So not only would these fake shutters not 'fit' vertically, if they were real, but they also wouldn't even have a hope of 'fitting' horizontally if they were real — because they were installed two far from the edges of the windows! Ugh. Simply dreadful.

The house shown in the beginning and towards the end, bluish color, what color paints are used? House color and trim. I live in central Florida and I’m planning on painting my house. So beautiful. I’d love to paint it those colors. So tropical.
